When it comes to getting a cold, flu, or sore throat, it’s nice to have things on hand so you can ward off any symptoms as quick as possible. I often encourage my patients to stock up on gentle supports to help them tackle the cold and flu season and so they can treat at the first signs of infection. Here’s an overview of what I’m keeping at home this fall:
For ongoing prevention
- Vitamin D drops (Cytomatrix) – boosts immunity and prevents seasonal effective disorder
- Vitamin C (Cyto-C by Cytomatrix) – boosts immunity and specifically helps with upper respiratory tract health
- Probiotics (HFM Forte by Seroyal OR Multi-strain 11 by Cytomatrix) – boosts immunity and specifically helps with upper respiratory tract health
- Mushroom Matrix (Cytomatrix) – a combination of targeted mushrooms that help balance the immune system in addition to specific benefits including anti-inflammatory, anti-fatigue, and boosting white blood cell function
For acute support
- Oregano oil – anti-bacterial, at the onset of a sore throat
- Eucalyptus oil – anti-viral, in a humidifier or topically at the first signs of cold or flu
- IM-Matrix (Cytomatrix) – a combination of anti-microbial and immuno-stimulating herbs to help resolve upper respiratory infections
- Echinacea (MediHerb) – supports a healthy immune system and relieves sore throat and upper respiratory tract symptoms
In addition to stocking up my medicine cabinet, the fall is a good time to be reminded of other ways to help boost immunity such as enjoying a diet high in antioxidants (ie berries, veggies, and other colorful foods), supporting good and sufficient sleep habits, and getting outside to move our bodies daily.
For more suggestions or for those with specific concerns, please reach out to your ND or Homeopath on the best ways to get your ready for the fall cold and flu season.
