In the last 10 years green smoothies have become more and more mainstream. This once health fad has become a staple in many people’s health regime because they (should) taste good and make you feel great. A green smoothie really is the best way to start your day – but why? It all comes down to your pH balance.
pH Balancing – What is it all about?
On waking, our bodies are naturally more acidic (aka a low pH). The worst thing we can do, first thing in the morning, is add more acid to the system such as a coffee or a bagel with cream cheese. What the body is really craving is something alkaline like a green smoothie or a lemon water, to help balance your pH.
But WHY you ask? Well, pH is the abbreviation for potential hydrogen. The pH of any solution is the measure of its hydrogen-ion concentration. The higher the pH reading, the more alkaline and oxygen-rich the fluid is. The lower the pH reading, the more acidic and oxygen-deprived the fluid is. Oxygen is essential for our wellbeing and cellular function and thus the more oxygen-rich our blood is, the healthier our cells will be.
The pH range is from 0 to 14, with 7.0 being neutral. Anything above 7.0 is alkaline, anything below 7.0 is considered acidic.
Human blood stays in a very narrow pH range but generally is slightly alkaline (7.365). When blood pH falls below or above this number symptoms of disease follow. Therefore, the pH in the rest of the body fluctuates in order to keep the blood pH at an optimal level.
How do I promote an Alkaline pH?
Fruits and veggies are the primary ingredients in helping to promote an alkaline balance in the body. Therefore, a diet rich in colour can help give you cellular energy, promote detoxification, and encourage the body to function optimally.
Although all fruits and vegetables promote alkalinity, dark green leafy vegetables are super loaded in alkaline minerals such as calcium and magnesium which will help improve your pH balance faster.
Any way that you’re able to increase your dark leafy greens is a great way to alkalinize your body. So why not start your day off with a green smoothie! An extra boost of oxygen-rich nutrients at the peak acidic time of day (the morning) is sure to help make your body feel great.
