As women age, it is natural for our estrogen to lower as we approach menopause. Peri-menopause is the transitional stage post-reproduction but prior to full menopause. This is a highly fluctuating time in a woman’s life, both hormonally and often socially, and can take anywhere from 1-2 years to spanning over a decade.
The most common peri-menopausal symptoms that patients will come see me for include:
- Fatigue
- Sleep disturbances
- Irregular cycles
- Heavy cycles
- Hot flashes
- Mood swings or PMS
Estrogen is a highly influential hormone – it impacts the cardiovascular system, cholesterol levels, weight distribution, mental wellness, as well as ovarian function.
Psychosocially, peri-menopause is often marked by significant stress. During our 40s and 50s, many women may be working, caring for children and/or elderly parents, or experiencing career and/or relationship changes. All of these things impact our psyche, having a direct impact on our experience of peri-menopause.
Lastly, estrogens also play a protective role in our bone and cardiovascular health. As we reach menopause, this can be an important time to not only manage symptoms but add preventative strategies to ensure the post-menopausal stage is a healthy one.
As a result, peri-menopause can appear very different from person to person. But, regardless of the symptoms, suffering is unnecessary as there are often many ways to find support. So, if you’re experiencing some peri-menopausal changes, come chat; we’re here to help.
