Do you ever wonder what all the buzz on “antioxidants” is about? Many supplements and foods report to be ‘antioxidant-rich’ or a ‘great source of antioxidants’ – but what does that really mean and how does that affect one’s body? Well, let’s chat….
Biochem breakdown
Our body’s are amazing machines. We are constantly undergoing a wide range of metabolic reactions at any given time. From digesting and absorbing foods to metabolizing medications and environmental toxins – our cells are busy.
One of these metabolic reactions is ‘oxidation’ whereby we free up electrons call ‘free radicals’. Think of these free radicals as loose kids on the playground. When the bell rings (oxidation) they are loose wrecking havoc on the playing ground. Then, when parents show up (antioxidants), they grab their kids hands, and all that loose chaos is under control.
So that’s what antioxidants do! They terminate or control oxidation reactions in the body thus halting damage to the cells. Ultimately, we need these reactions to happen – just like kids need to go home after school when the bell goes – but we want it to be a controlled process.
There are many sources of antioxidants. All fruits and veggies are jam packed with antioxidants so getting those into your diet is a great way to ensure your protecting your cells. If you’re one to catch colds easily, or if you want to improve your body’s overall function and protect your cells, consider boosting your antioxidant levels with a green or berry smoothie a few days a week. For those that need extra support, that’s when supplementation or IV therapy can be great options.
So next time people throw around the idea of ‘antioxidants’ doing this or that, you’ll really understand what they’re talking about (and maybe even understand it better than them)!
